Introduction

According to Bharat Bhise, you look forward to your baby making adorable sounds, grunts, coos, and squeaks. However, if he or she has a clogged nose that shows your baby is having respiratory issues, it’s an awful feeling for even the most experienced parents. Let’s figure out how to unclog a baby’s nose.

The Details

  1. Saline drops – The easiest way to clear your baby’s nose is to use nasal drops or a nasal spray. Nasal drops have a saline solution that thins out the mucus and cuts through it. This allows the passageway to clear out and relieves congestion in the nose. If you can’t get saline drops or spray at the store, you can make some at home.

Warm up a cup of filtered water and add half a teaspoon of salt to it. Mix it well and allow the mixture to cool before using it. To use the saline solution, gently tilt your baby’s head back and carefully squeeze a couple of drops inside the nose. Follow up by tilting your baby to the side or on his or her tummy so that most of the mucus can drain out. Wipe away the drained mucus with soft tissue.

  1. Humidifier – Nose congestion usually occurs due to excess mucus or mucus drying up and blocking the nasal passage. You can prevent the mucus from drying out by raising the humidity in the room. You can achieve this with a humidifier. Set a cool-mist humidifier near the baby’s crib. However, the humidifier shouldn’t be close enough to spray a few mist droplets directly on your baby or the crib. You also need to thoroughly clean the area beside the humidifier regularly to prevent mold and bacteria growth. If you don’t have a humidifier, you can run a warm shower and sit in the bathroom with your baby till the congestion is unclogged.
  1. Steam session – Steam also works for dry nasal congestion. You need to boil a tub of water and add a few drops of eucalyptus or peppermint oil to it. Keep the tub of water near you and sit next to it with your baby in your lap. Breastfeed your baby or just sit there for around half an hour to ease the congestion.
  1. Natural chest rubs – A chest rub can also help with breathing problems caused by nasal congestion. You can make a natural chest rub at home by mixing lavender or chamomile essential oils with a thick lotion. Take a small amount of that mix and rub it gently on your baby’s chest to help clear the mucus in the lungs and soothe your baby to sleep.

Conclusion

Bharat Bhise suggests that you use the above-mentioned methods for unclogging your baby’s nose. If the unclogged nose is accompanied by fever, cough, and other signs of illness, you need to visit the pediatrician. Even simple colds need to be taken seriously since they can quickly turn into pneumonia.
