The 12-steps program is very popular these days, it was created to make sure that the people that were addicted to drugs had an alternative to the medications and hospitalizations and also the misconception that is the treatments that were bizarre such as electrocution were being used to treat addiction—which is entirely false. But the first two reasons, looking back in hindsight were the two major reasons that 12-steps program came into being.
The 12-step program was initially made for people that were suffering from alcohol addiction. During the 1920’s the rise in alcohol addiction was the main reason why people were committing crimes and getting dejected from society and their families. It has also been attributed to a culture of teenagers where they thought living a jet-set lifestyle with booze and beer being a standard of being “cool” which gave rise to many movies of that decade but the reality is that it all came crashing down with the wave of alcohol addiction in the 1930s.
At the end of the 1930s, the cases of alcohol addiction were way too many which concerned a lot of people and the rate of their treatment being successful was also decreasing which forced a few people to sit together and find a better way. They realized that since the reason for this is mental, the solution should be mental as well. Therefore, they started the inception of the 12-steps program.
The creation of the 12-steps program.
The program started to take shape in the form of a spiritual landscape that allowed the usage of the teachings of Christ and the principles of the Holy Bible that can help a person reform themselves from within, once the reform happens from within, the outer being changes as well. Seeing that the teachings of the Christ were helping a lot of people back then made the creators feel like this is the key to the success of this program being created.
Since the teenagers and the people were morally unhinged, they needed something to bring them back to the real world, to help the rising cases of addiction and to ease the pressure on the hospitals and care centers; the 12-steps program was created.
Benefits.
The program asked for a few things that the patient should do. The first thing that is to be asked by the 12-steps is to accept one’s wrong doings, it is to accept one’s mistakes and the words and actions they used to hurt others—it is all about accepting that and finally letting go of that. The 12-steps also asks that you let go of others mistakes that they did to you, others wrongdoings, it will make you feel less of a person who is walking and sitting with guilt and more of a person who has accepted Christ into their life and his teachings of forgiveness.
The program asks the patient to always go to god for any kind of a problem when it comes to their addiction. It asks god to help them in trying and hard times where they are weak and quite close to relapsing. They are told to remember god whenever they feel like this, and god as per the teachings will help them understand that whenever there is no one, when the doctors aren’t there, when the nurses are not there, when even family, friends, and relatives, and even strangers are not there—god will be there giving you that support that you need to overcome your addiction spiritually.
